THIS IS PART ONE OF MY “ARCHIVE PURGE” SERIES ON THIS ART BLOG.

CLICK to expand – cartoon from “The Guardian” 1994

I have oodles of containers full of art files – much  of it never seen, or published. This cartoon was published in 1994, in Bundaberg’s The Guardian newspaper, however. I want to get them out of my system and purge them on this Art Blog. With regard to cartoons though, I will try to post only those with a more generic theme, and avoid parochial issues, unless the issue relates to a worldly topic.

In the 1990s, I did a short stint (2 years) as freelance cartoonist for Bundaberg’s fortnightly The Guardian newspaper. I also did a year at another local rag The Bugle, with a cartoon series entitled “Meals’ Spiel.” The job (in both cases) involved a cartoon on a topical subject, every fortnight.

I thought all my cartoon archives were lost in Bundaberg’s 2013 flood – as I had the original news clippings in a cardboard box on the floor at the time. I had 8 inches of water through my unit then, with its persistent, gluey red mud. It dried like concrete. Could barely chip it away from metal objects later, so newspapers had no chance.

So, I am happy to say that this week I have found all the photocopies of the cartoons (& a few original news clippings). Here is but one of them.
