“BLANK VERSE” – 1ST PRIZE POETRY SECTION, BUNDY ARTS FESTIVAL 2010.
In 2010, the first 5 lines of this poem came into my head, in rhythm with my footsteps, as I walked over the old Burnett River bridge. I stopped walking, and jotted the words down on a scrap piece of paper from my pocket. Then I added the other 3 lines when I reached home. I entered the poem in the annual Bundaberg Arts Festival poetry section and won 1st Prize ($300). Funny, but it was one of those epiphanic moments when I just knew I was going to win. That is not a big-headed statement. I mean, that usually when a piece of creativity has come from nowhere in my head, it is pretty damn good. Better than I could create, if I were really trying. As though it comes from somewhere else, and not from ourselves. As though someone else outside my being is writing it. I am sure most artists/writers have experienced such a thing from time to time.
