This illustration is one that I originally drew for my contemporary Gothic novel The Silting. However, I decided to pull it out at the last minute. Not because of its violently graphic theme, but because it tended to “give the game away” too much, about the novel. I now think it is ok, and does not give too much away. I wrote the novel for my PhD, and finished writing it in 2007. This illustration was done with oil-pastels on A4 size acid-free paper. Rather disturbingly, the subject matter has become a part of our news of late. Ironically, the novel features a fanatical religious cult.
